Richfield Review: Bike Routes

In 2012, Richfield adopted a Bicycle Master Plan. The purpose of the plan was “To promote the friendly co-existence of bicycle riders and other transportation users in Richfield.” Indeed, over the past four years, Richfield has been making that vision a reality.

Richfield has a very nice recreational bike path around Veteran’s Memorial Park. The path is only a few miles long and traverses the outer edges of the park. On it you can enjoy lake views, woods and open park areas. This is a great recreational trail. Park either off of Portland at 64th or park over by the pool and ice arena. There is bike rental available at Malt-T-Melt / Wheel Fun Rentals.

Skip the Traffic Jam and Bike to Work!

Richfield also has several commuter trails throughout the city. Bloomington Avenue has long been a corridor for bike commuters. This was striped a few years ago for bikes. The path extends from 73rd street to Crosstown Highway and from there it connects to a trail over to Lake Nokomis. The street is well paved and Bloomington Avenue is lightly traveled.

The Bloomington Ave trail connects to a trail along 73rd and Diagonal Road. The marked path goes from Nicollet to Cedar Ave and at Cedar, there is a bike path that leads either North or South along Cedar.

Additionally, there is a bike trail that goes along 76th Street that extends from Cedar Ave to 35W. This trail has a few odd interruptions but is a very nice trail for going East/West.

From a commuter perspective, when completed, Portland Avenue will be a bike commuters dream. I don’t advise using it now, but when complete, bikers will be able to safely commute all the way through Richfield to either the Minneapolis Greenway or all the way to downtown Minneapolis.
